The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

Hi everyone. This is my review on my Favorite Video Game Movie ever. I watched it this morning. Also, it’s been trending on social media for weeks now. This movie has so many Nintendo references. So let’s get down to the review for today.

Let’s-a Go!

Italian-American brothers named, Mario & Luigi have recently started a plumbing business in Brooklyn, to the ridicule of their ex-employer, Spike, & the disapproval of their dad. After seeing a significant water main leak on the news, Mario & Luigi go underground to fix it. But they both get sucked into a Warp Pipe, & separated.

Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom, ruled by Princess Peach, while Luigi lands in the Dark Lands, (partial reference to Luigi’s Mansion) ruled by the evil Koopa king Bowser. Bowser seeks to marry Peach, & will destroy the Mushroom Kingdom using a Super Star if she refuses. However, he also sings a song, which the song is my favorite part of the movie:

He imprisons Luigi to threaten Mario, whom he sees as competition for Peach's love. On the other hand, Mario meets Toad, who takes him to Peach. Peach plans to ally with the Kongs to help defeat Bowser, & allows both Mario & Toad to travel with her. Peach also reveals that she ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom when she was a baby, where the Toads adopted her, & eventually became their leader.

In the Jungle Kingdom, King Cranky Kong agrees to help on the condition that Mario defeats his son, Donkey Kong, in a fight. Despite Donkey Kong's brute strength, Mario is much faster, & is able to defeat him using a Cat Suit. Meow! 🐱

Mario, Peach, Toad, & the Kongs use karts to drive back to the Mushroom Kingdom. But Bowser's army ambushes them on Rainbow Road. When a blue-shelled Koopa General destroys part of the road in a kamikaze attack, Mario & Donkey Kong fall to the ocean, while the other Kongs are captured. Wahoo!

Peach & Toad return to the Mushroom Kingdom, & urge the citizens to leave. Then, Bowser arrives aboard his flying castle, & proposes to Peach, who reluctantly accepts after Bowser's advisor, Kamek tortures Toad. Mario & Donkey Kong, having been eaten by an eel-like Maw-Ray, learn they both want the respect of their fathers. They escape the Maw-Ray by riding a rocket from Donkey Kong's kart, & rush to Bowser & Peach's wedding.

At the wedding reception, Bowser intends to execute all of his prisoners in lava in Peach's honor. Toad smuggles an Ice Flower into Peach's bouquet, which she uses to freeze Bowser. Mario & Donkey Kong arrive, & free the prisoners, with Mario using a Racoon Suit to save Luigi.

Enraged, Bowser frees himself & summons a Bomber Bill to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom. But Mario knocks it off course, & directs it into the Warp Pipe where it explodes, creating a vacuum that causes everyone & Bowser's castle to be transported to Brooklyn.

As they fight Bowser, Mario & Luigi grab the Super Star, become invincible, & defeat the Koopas. At the end of the final battle, Bowser is shrunk with a Mini Mushroom, & imprisoned in a jar. Mario & Luigi are hailed as heroes, & praised by Brooklyn's residents. Afterwards, the Mario Bros. move to a house in the Mushroom Kingdom, & begin a day of plumbing work.

GAME OVER!

This movie has to be the best video game movie ever in my opinion. It’s even the highest grossing video game movie ever. It has so many Nintendo references. Such as the Nintendo GameCube ringtone, Yoshi’s cameo at the end, & so much more. However, I’m very curious to check out the live-action version from 1993. But it’s very different comparing to this movie.
